Overview
The DUI Crash Summary & Map tool highlights alcohol- and drug-related injury crashes across California. It combines a statewide trend dashboard with an interactive county map and detailed local summaries so users can track impaired-driving crash trends.
You can open the tool from the Crash Summaries menu or directly at DUI Crash Summary & Map Tool. Each visualization updates automatically as you change the filters along the top of the page.
Getting started
- Choose whether you are analyzing alcohol-involved, drug-involved, or combined DUI crashes.
- Select your preferred crash severity metric: total crashes, fatalities, or fatalities and serious injuries (FSI).
- Adjust the year range if you need to focus on a shorter or longer window. The default range includes the five most recent years of finalized SWITRS data.
- Use the tabs below the filters to move between statewide charts, the county map and table, and detailed local summaries.
Statewide trends
The first panel shows annual statewide totals for your selected filters starting in 1997. Three synchronized charts highlight crashes, fatalities, and FSI counts so you can spot statewide inflection points.
Statewide County map and table
The map and table panels summarize how each county compares to the statewide picture. Both views respond to the same filters you configured above.
Interactive county map
- Choose whether the shading represents percentages or absolute counts by toggling the Show Percent checkbox.
- Select a county to open a pop-up with annual trends and rate comparisons.
- Switch the data variable (crashes, fatalities, or FSI) to explore severity differences.
Summary table by County
Sort by the column headers to surface counties with the largest burden.
County or city summary
The final panel delivers location-specific charts so you can brief partners or agencies on local conditions.
- Select a county to see combined incorporated and unincorporated trends, or pick an individual city for jurisdiction-level details.
- Review the annual line charts to compare your area to the statewide baseline.
- Scan the pie charts and stacked summaries to see how crash, party, and victim numbers break down by impairment type.
Reminder
For county-wide totals, choose the county name with the All option. Pick Unincorporated to focus on county-maintained roadways only.
