Crash data used by TIMS

What data sources does TIMS use?

TIMS primarily uses crash data from the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), which includes crash reports submitted by law enforcement agencies throughout California. Most tools use SWITRS data, but some tools also utilize data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).

Can I export data from TIMS?

Yes, TIMS allows you to export query results and reports in various formats including CSV and PDF. Look for download or print options in the toolbar of each tool.

How current is the crash data in TIMS?

TIMS data is updated on a quarterly basis as crash reports are processed. There may be a delay between when a crash occurs and when it appears in TIMS.

How does TIMS geocode crash locations?

SafeTREC performs geocoding on SWITRS crash data to accurately map crash locations. This process converts location information from crash reports into geographic coordinates (latitude/longitude) that can be displayed on maps and used for spatial analysis. For more details, see SWITRS geocoding.

Can I access raw crash report data?

TIMS provides aggregated and analyzed crash data. For specific crash report details or raw data requests, you may need to contact the appropriate law enforcement agency or CHP directly.
